pectus excavatum physical therapy
Physical therapy The role of physical therapy for the treatment of pectus deformity in general and certain specific problems seen in pectus deformity is an important and often unrecognized treatment option. However, there is only less evidence to successfully treat pectus deformity especially more severe forms. Muscle construction can help 'cover' deformity, but exercises especially to build the pectus muscles can make the most pronounced pectus especially in the severe pectus excavatum. As an attached or complementary treatment, physiotherapy can be offered to patients as part of a fixing program for carinatum pectus or pigeon coconut, or after a NUSS operation for the correction of a patient's excavatum pectus. In addition, there are certain deformities of the chest wall, such as rib flattening or significant flattening, if physical therapy can be a significant part of the treatment offered. After an initial consultation we will evaluate the most appropriate treatment method for your pectus deformity and decide whether we will recommend physical therapy as part of that treatment. If physical therapy is offered, a personalized exercise regime based on an exhaustive evaluation and a trained and experienced physiotherapist in the treatment of patients with chest wall problems and pectus will complete a physical evaluation for you. Normally it involves a combination of static and dynamic stretches, passive and active exercises to help reverse the effects of the 'fissure of pectus' as weak muscle and loss of flexibility, as well as to address specific areas such as developing core abdominal muscles to counter ribs. Manipulation or Mobilization of coastal cartilages is a type of physical therapy and is a very specific part of the fixing program that the pectus clinic offers in the treatment of pectus carinatum. It is unique for our treatment and seems to significantly improve compliance (leaving the bra), shortens the period in which the bra is used all the time and can reduce the length that the bra needs to be used in total.
